Finding the right Event Photographer for you

There are a number of photographers, especially in this digital age, in any given area offering photography services. Do a simple Google search, and you are bombarded with information on different photographers.

So, how do you choose a reputable event photographer that is just right for you?

Here are some simple guidelines to help you find just the right photographer for you and your needs and avoid disreputable individuals whose only aim is to collect your money and run.

    Portfolio Samples

Visit the photography website and view the available samples. If you like the style of the images presented and there is more than one photographer working for the studio, ask to see the photographer’s work that would be photographing your event.

    Testimonials

Look for testimonials from clients. You want to know that other clients have been satisfied with the work offered by a particular photographer. If you don’t find testimonials, request them or look elsewhere.

Weekend Warrior or Full Time Professional

Choose a photographer who is a full time professional. There are so many people out there trying to make money with their digital cameras by trying to convince consumers that they are “professionals.” You wouldn’t hire a part-time doctor, lawyer, or dentist. So, don’t hire someone who is only a photographer part of the time as they may not have backup equipment or covered by insurance.

    Uncle Harry

Beware of “Uncle Harry with a camera” photographers. There are a ton of folks like these out there who offer to meet you at the event, take photos and hand you a disk of images. What you will get is virtually worthless. If you are going to make an investment in photography, be sure to work with a reputable professional who will stand behind their work and still be there tomorrow if you have a problem.

    Professional Photographer or Hired Staff

There are companies that exists that send hired staff with photography equipment to snap away at your event. Hired un-trained staff get paid around $20/hr and are more photography enthusiast then professional photographers. These photographers will aim for quantity in the hope to get quality. Make sure you know who will be photography your event and ask to see their portfolio.

    Satisfaction Guarantee

Make sure you are offered a satisfaction guarantee. Your event photography can be a significant investment. You need to know you will get the quality and service you are paying for and deserve.

    What Price to Pay

Don’t choose your photographer based on price alone. While it may be tempting to save a bit of cash before the event, are you prepared to get no photos from the night? Talk to a few photographers, meet with them and then make your decision. Otherwise, you may end up with mediocre photographs at best. Any price you pay for mediocrity is too much.

    Editing & Post Processing

Will all your photographs be edited and post processed to get the very best out of them? Does the photographer only edit a selected few and charge extra for additional photographs to be edited? Editing and Post Processing is essential in getting the best out of digital photographs. Don’t be stung by hidden editing fees.

    Presentation

Have you invited VIP guests to your event that you want to keep happy and impress? Then don’t hire a photographer that doesn’t dress professionally or can’t be bothered to get a decent haircut and make themselves look presentable. The last thing you want is to have your guests being photographed by someone that looks like they got lost on their way to the kitchen to do the dishes.

    Flexibility

Is the photographer flexible as far as rescheduling sessions, if necessary? Some photographers will charge a high fee if you have to reschedule or postpone. Things happen, and the photographer you choose should be flexible and understanding.

    Pre-Event Meetings

Does the photographer you are considering take the time to meet you in advance of your event and plan your event thoroughly? If not, consider finding one who will. Going through the event run sheet and location can be a great way to generate photography ideas and check out the lighting situations.

Whether you are looking for a photographer to capture your Award Ceremony, Elegant Gala Dinner, Golf Day or Annual Celebration, be sure you are working with a dedicated professional who truly cares about you and your photos. Event photography is an investment. Be sure you take the time to choose wisely.
